The contemporary designer's layered and colorful designs seamlessly fit within the royal and historical context of the Grote Kerk Breda. Van Bergen often draws inspiration from the arts. Pieces from the 'Complementary' collection, inspired by paintings by Vincent van Gogh, and pieces from the 'Black' collection, inspired by photography by Ed van der Elsken, were showcased. Additionally, Mattijs van Bergen created several new designs specifically for this exhibition. He collaborated with various craftsmen for this collection.
The new collection pieces are inspired by the strong women of Nassau and the history of the Grote Kerk Breda. Figures like Johanna van Polanen and the armor of Engelbrecht II served as inspirations for Mattijs. The creations pay tribute to women, portraying them as muses, goddesses, heroines, queens, protectors, and givers of life. "Creative Luxury for Headstrong Women," which is the central vision of Van Bergen's work, seamlessly aligns with Breda and the Grote Kerk Breda. In Breda, a well-known saying engraved on the church's Nassau bell in 1667 goes: "He who wants to live in joy in Breda must give women the upper hand."
Renowned Dutch fashion photographers Petrovsky & Ramone, invited by the Grote Kerk Breda, captured the new designs by Mattijs van Bergen in their unique style. These six images were blown up and displayed in the choir aisle of the church, serving as campaign visuals for the exhibition. Additionally, Pastrami Film Company created a short documentary about the creative process of Mattijs van Bergen for the exhibition. This Rotterdam-based film production company operates at the intersection of fiction and documentary, skillfully delivering stories with an innovative and distinctive approach.
